Let it be said right away, Romania is not like Western and North Europe, and you should approach and evaluate all conversations, information, and (verbal) agreements in a completely different light.

Locals rarely say "no" in conversations in the Balkans, because it signals either a lack of knowledge or weakness, so be extremely careful not to think that "a lack of no" means "yes", because there is generally very little trust in - most things.

There are many who consider newly arrived foreigners as easy prey, and you will experience that they use this very "entry angle" to gain trust, but with profit in mind.

|| The judicial system

It takes patience and therefore extra resources to deal with the court system and the public authorities in Romania. Although corruption is on the decline in the larger cities, expect the opposite outside of them.

Many foreign companies will realise that hourly rates for lawyers in Bucharest exceed the levels in Copenhagen, Berlin, London, and Paris, and this is of course due to only one circumstance!

The National Bar Association in Romania is outdated in many aspects and lacks the incentive to introduce transparency and actual competition. The control system is not independent, and everything is done with a certain "inertia".

||| Avoid the pitfalls

Every Romanian has "a friend" who knows more or can help with a good offer. In these situations, you should of course thank them for their help, maybe listen to the friend, but always look around for alternatives before you make your decisions.
